Air rifles...... fun pop gun or serious weapon.As somebody who has been shooting for 20 years, I can say that a air rifle is a very deadly weapon. On a calm day its good out to 50 yards. normally used from 15 - 40 yards. running at under 12ftlbs power, using a pellet weighing in at just under a gram, it works out its firing at 400mph!! but travels for 15 - 30 seconds tops.
Quarry...
There are furry things and feathered things to shoot the list is as follows.
BIRDS: crows, rooks, jackdaws, magpies, jays, woodpigeon, collared doves, feral pigeons.

MAMMALS: brown rats, grey squirrels, stoats, mink and rabbits.

The law...
Many people shoot live quarry, either on their own land or where they have permission. The species which you can shoot are limited by the law and by the effective power of an air rifle. All birds are protected, and although there are seasons when you can legally shoot game, and some wildfowl, these are generally not suitable quarry for air rifles. However, as long as you are complying with firearms law, you can shoot certain pest species. These are covered by open general licences which, in simple terms, mean you can shoot the birds provided you have the landowner’s permission and provided you are doing it for one of the reasons allowed by the licence. These reasons are:

to protect crops
to protect game and wildlife
to protect public health or safety

Those species covered by the licences, for which air rifles are suitable, include: crows, rooks, jackdaws, magpies, jays, woodpigeon, collared doves, and feral pigeons. Sparrows and starlings are no longer on the general licences for England. Therefore you cannot shot them in England, although they can still be shot in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. You can shoot mammal pests at any time provided you have the landowner’s permission. Air rifles are suitable for: brown rats, grey squirrels, stoats, mink and rabbits.

Air Rifles Code of Practice (revised July 2007)

The most important rule of gun handling…… NEVER POINT ANY RIFLE, LOADED OR UNLOADED, IN AN UNSAFE DIRECTION. It is estimated that there are four million air rifles in the UK, the vast majority of which are used in a safe and responsible manner. This leaflet offers guidance to those who shoot with them. It does not apply in Northern Ireland where firearms laws are very different. Above all, safety is the most important consideration. Always know where the muzzle of your air rifle is pointing and NEVER point it in an unsafe direction. Whenever you shoot, make sure you know where the pellet is going to end up before you pull the trigger. The Law The law makes no distinction between air rifles and more powerful guns for which you need a licence – they are all classed as firearms. This means that any offence you commit can carry a very heavy penalty – and there are at least 38 different offences. Following this code will help you to keep on the right side of the law, but, if you have any doubt, seek advice from BASC or your local police firearms licensing department. Who can shoot 18 years* If you are 18 years or older there are no restrictions on buying an air rifle and ammunition, and you can use it where you have permission to shoot. 14 – 17 years* You can

borrow an air rifle and ammunition
use an air rifle, without supervision, on private premises where you have permission

You cannot

buy or hire an air rifle, or ammunition, or receive them as a gift. Your air rifle and ammunition must be bought and looked after by someone over 18 – normally your parent, guardian or some other responsible adult.
have an air rifle in a public place unless you are supervised by somebody aged 21 or over, and you have a reasonable excuse to do so (for example, while on the way to a shooting ground).

Under 14 years You can

use an air rifle under supervision on private premises with permission from the occupier – normally the owner or tenant. The person who supervises you must be at least 21 years old.

You cannot

buy, hire or receive an air rifle or its ammunition as a gift, or shoot, without adult supervision.

Parents or guardians who buy an air rifle for use by someone under 14 must exercise control over it at all times, even in the home or garden. It is illegal to sell an air rifle or ammunition to a person under 18 years of age. * These age limits apply from the introduction of the Violent Crime Reduction Act which is expected to come into force in October 2007. Where you can shoot Always ensure that you are authorised by the landowner or person with the sporting rights to shoot where you intend to, and that you know precisely where the boundaries are. Get permission in writing, if possible, to remove any doubt. Whenever you are in a public place you should carry the rifle in a gun cover and always ensure that it is unloaded and not cocked. Trespassing Going on to private land, or water where you do not have permission, is trespassing, and if you are carrying an air rifle it becomes armed trespass. Whether the gun is loaded or not, or whether you are carrying pellets, is irrelevant – armed trespass is a serious criminal offence carrying heavy penalties. Only shoot where you have the permission of the landowner or tenant. Firing pellets beyond your boundary It is an offence to fire an air rifle pellet beyond the land where you have permission to shoot, unless the occupier of the neighbouring land has also given you permission. Where someone under 14 is shooting, both the young person and the supervising adult can be prosecuted. It is also against the law, in England and Wales, to fire an air rifle within 50 feet of the centre of a highway if this results in someone being injured, interrupted or endangered. These offences could be committed, for example, when someone is shooting in their garden close to a road and the pellets ricochet onto the highway. It is an offence in Scotland to discharge any gun in a culpable or reckless manner. This means shooting without caring about the safety of others. What you can shoot Target shooting There are numerous clubs catering for this growing sport, throughout the UK, and they can offer great help and shooting opportunities to both the novice and the experienced shooter alike. You will find contact details on www.goshooting.com If you want to practise on your own premises make sure that you have an effective backstop. Soft earth or chipboard is ideal, but don’t use any hard, polished surface because it is likely to cause a dangerous ricochet or could cause the pellet to rebound and hit the shooter. Remember that you can be prosecuted if any pellet goes beyond your land, whether it is directly fired or an accidental ricochet.

This is a brilliant product called Accusharp, an American idea, Ive been using mine for three years now and having sharpened all my chef knives and any other blades i own i can honestly say this is great piece of kit.A simple operation of sliding the tool down your blade anything up to 10 times will take a dull edge to razor sharp in a matter of minuets..I am now a stockist of this product... see below for prices...

To use, place knife on table or counter top with the cutting edge up and with about 1/2” of the blade tip extending past the edge of the table as shown in the illustration. While holding the knife handle with one hand, hold the AccuSharp® as shown with your fingers through the opening formed by the handle and the finger guard. REMEMBER: THE SHARPENER MOVES WHILE THE TOOL BEING SHARPENED REMAINS STATIONERY. Straddle the knife’s cutting edge near the handle of the knife with the “V” notch formed in the sharpener. With the head of the AccuSharp® at about a 90° angle to the knife’s edge press down LIGHTLY using thumb pressure and draw the AccuSharp® past the point of the blade. You will feel the tungsten carbide sharpeners removing metal from the knife. Several passes in this manner may be required before your knife’s cutting angle conforms to the proper angle of AccuSharp®. Once that angle is achieved then two or three passes should be sufficient to bring your knife back to a sharp edge. REMEMBER: LIGHT PRESSURE IS SUFFICIENT. Heavy pressure might cause you to lose control of the knife and possibly cause injury. The tungsten carbide sharpeners of AccuSharp® are of high grade industrial quality and are one of the hardest materials known. Even so, after several years of use, they may become worn. Due to their unique design the sharpeners can be reversed for double life. To reverse the sharpeners lay the AccuSharp® on its side with the screws up. Remove the screws and carefully separate the two halves of the handle as shown in the following illustration. The sharpeners should remain in the lower half. Simply switch the position of the sharpeners (front sharpener to rear and rear sharpener to front) taking care to keep the reference dot (n) on the sharpeners facing toward the tail end of the handle. If the finger guard becomes disengaged during this operation, secure both ends of it in the slots provided prior to reassembly. CAUTION: DO NOT REASSEMBLE THE KNIFE SHARPENER WITHOUT THE FINGER GUARD. SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT. Reassemble the two halves of the handle and secure with the three screws. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN SCREWS. The factory torque setting is about 5 inch pounds of pressure. Tighten them only until you feel increased resistance. If sharpener has any cracks around the screw heads do not use it. Either discard the sharpener or return it under the terms of the warranty. AccuSharp® is perfectly safe when used properly. As a precaution, the knife blade should be thoroughly cleaned after sharpening.

Pests Act 1954 Control of rabbits: Information for occupiers of land

1. Responsibilities of occupiers to control rabbits Under Section 1 of the Pests Act 1954

The whole of England, apart from the City of London and Isles of Scilly, has been declared a rabbit clearance area. Under Section 1(2) of the 1954 Act, all occupiers of land in a rabbit clearance area have a continuing obligation to kill or take any wild rabbits living on, or resorting to, their land, unless they can establish that it is not reasonably practicable to do so. If it is not practicable to destroy the rabbits, occupiers have an obligation to prevent the rabbits from causing damage elsewhere by, for example, fencing them in with rabbit-proof fencing. The obligation to control rabbits is irrespective of the use being made of the occupier’s land or that of their neighbours.

2. Enforcement of the obligation to control rabbits

Where an occupier neglects a serious infestation on their land which is causing damage to neighbouring land, they will be reminded of their obligation by Natural England and given reasonable time to put matters right. If this warning is ignored, the Secretary of State has powers, under Section 98 of the Agriculture Act 1947, to serve a notice on an occupier requiring them to take specified action against the rabbits. If an occupier fails to take the specified action they would be liable for prosecution. In addition, the Secretary of State can also arrange for a third party to carry out the necessary control work on the occupier’s land and then recover the cost of this work from the occupier.

3. Methods of controlling rabbits

Occupiers may use any legal method to control rabbits on their land, e.g. gassing, trapping, snaring, shooting, fencing etc. Further advice on methods of control is given in the Natural England advisory leaflet "Rabbits" TAN01, "Rabbits: use of fencing to prevent agricultural damage" TAN16 and "Rabbits: use of cage-trapping to prevent agricultural damage" TAN17 which are available from Natural England

4. The right to shoot rabbits

The Ground Game Act 1880 gives an occupier the right to shoot rabbits on his/her land during the day and to authorise in writing one other person to do so. That person must be a member of the occupier’s household or staff, or be employed for reward. An occupier may apply to Natural England for authority to use a reasonable number of extra guns, if the owner of the shooting rights will neither permit the occupier to use extra guns, nor undertake to destroy the rabbits themselves. If you wish to apply to use extra guns. Under the 1880 Act, as interpreted by the courts and as read with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, only the following are allowed to shoot rabbits at night:

a) An owner-occupier with shooting rights b) A landlord/landlady who has reserved their shooting rights c) A shooting tenant not in occupation who has derived the shooting rights from the owner; and d) An occupier, or one other person authorised by them in writing, where the occupier has written authority from another person with shooting rights.

5. Complaints about rabbit damage

If you are suffering damage from rabbits coming from neighbouring land and you have either asked your neighbour to control the rabbits but they have refused to do so or you cannot identify the neighbour, you should contact Natural England at the following address : Wildlife Licensing Unit, Natural England, Burghill Road, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, BS10 6NJ.

These are my new ferrets, the two albinos are girls and the polecat is a boy. Now your thinking small nasty biting smelly fur balls..... your look says it all, but in truth they are cute funny not very smelly at all tidy and loyal, I only have to walk into where they are housed and they all pop up the cage door to greet me.

The art of blending in.As you have already read you do not need expensive camo gear to get close to animals, if you follow a few very simple rules that is.

Know when and where the animals will be in a certain area!

Keep the wind in your face as much as possible!

Move slowly and watch where your feet land the sound of a SNAPPING twig carries a long way, not to our ears but to animals!

Do not wear make-up, or after shave, the woods don't normally smell of old spice or lynx.

Early mornings and late evenings are more productive times!

Animals are literally creatures of habit, going to the same places every day as their territory demands many males go to the same marking spots every day without fail find these and you will be rewarded with a glimpse of them.

A selection of hides not always needed, as you can just sit quitly and let wildlife come to you.
Here is some pictures i found just pointing out how a deer that is just brown in colour can be a ghost..

Two examples of camouflage! over the top!! I think so, I can prove to you that no camouflage is required for watching wildlife... A big statement yes, but with training you can become almost at one with the countryside. don't believe me. try me, Ive been shooting for the best part of 20 years and during the summer go out with just shorts and T shirt, so it can be done, oh by the way yes you did read that I shoot, do not be surprised, iam a true country-man, even got the collie dog, well collie cross. so why not be taught by an insider to the countryside..
we also teach hide building so if you own or have private access to land you can learn how to build your own hide.

survival skills

From the wilds brings many things. Why not try your hand at survival , it may sound hard but the biggest thing with surviving is common sense. A good example is making a camp for the night, check all around as much as you can the last thing you want is a rude awakening whilst you are asleep. or to wake up first light to be greeted by an ants nest or worse.

But we see the rabbit as a pure source of protein, and a good pot filler easy to find easy and to catch. the mushrooms, although over half of the 3500 species are poisonous most are good to eat. The berries speak for themselves, and the leg joint could last you a week...

Field shelters

A selection of shelters, easily constructed and very comfy when under them.From purpose made shelters like these to a bin bag all can be used to keep you warm and dry for a night.even leaves and moss are good for building a shelter, ivy used to tie things together and small branches for your bed, learn how to use mother nature instead of her using you.
Water.
The safe use of water is paramount, if your near a river go up stream as far as u can ( normally 300 yards ) so u can check there is nothing nasty in the water, unfortunately animals die and don't always choose the best place to drop. its been known for people to get food poisoning from drinking contaminated water,
You can make a filter from your sock using natural things you will find around your camp.charcoal from your fire grasses and moss. you can always boil the water..
Camp.
Setting up your camp before dark is the first thing you need to do clear an area to around 30 feet as a circle with space for your fire in the middle.
a good example of setting camp.
1 your tent.2 your fire. 3 is rocks for stashing food or collecting water.
a poor example the camp is too confined with trees and dead wood with no safe path in or out of the camp.
